Overview
A reconnaissance survey was conducted by the University of Nairobi project team consisting of Dr. Jane Ambuko, Dr. Catherine Kunyanga, Prof Margaret Hutchinson, Prof Willis Owino, and Mr. Stephen Maloba. The team worked in consultation and liaison with Technoserve’s field officers (Mr. Charles Murage, Embu County and Onesmus Mbatia, Machakos County. The goal of the survey was to identify the most suitable locations to establish aggregation centers for smallholder horticultural farmers under the Yieldwise project. The survey covered parts of Lower Eastern (Machakos) and Central Kenya (Embu).
The team adopted Technoserve’s assessment of institutional maturity (AIM) tool to select the groups and locations most suited for two centers: 1) An off-grid aggregation center which will benefit from aggregation and processing (wet and dry) facilities 2) An off-grid center which will benefit from aggregation facilities (evaporative cooling facilities) and dry processing facilities.
